C反应蛋白(C-reactionprotein，CRP)在1930年由Tillet和Francis发现。观察到一些急性病人的血清可与肺炎链球菌的荚膜C-多糖发生反应，随后证实能与C-多糖反应的物质是一种蛋白质，因而将这种蛋白质命名为C-反应蛋白(C-reaction protein，CRP)。
急性时相反应包括感染、炎症及创伤时某些血清蛋白浓度的变化，这些蛋白除CRP外，还包括血清淀粉样蛋白A、纤维蛋白原、触珠蛋白、α1酸性糖蛋白、铜蓝蛋白、α1抗胰蛋白酶等。其中CRP在健康人血清中浓度很低（＜5mg/L），而在细菌感染或组织损伤时，其浓度显著升高，故被认为其*有价值。
